North Dakota Broadband Mapping Application

The North Dakota Broadband Mapping Application displays information developed as part of the North Dakota Broadband Mapping Project. The State of North Dakota received an intial grant award of approximately $1.3 million to map broadband services under the State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the program will increase broadband access and adoption through better data collection and broadband planning. In September of 2010 the State recieved an additional award of about $2 million for a total award of $3.7 million.

The U.S. Department of Commerce - National Telecommunications Infrastructure Administration (NTIA) is administering the program and the North Dakota Information Technology Department (ITD) is overseeing the mapping and planning project. The state has contracted with the firm of Tetra Tech, Inc., to perform the mapping portion of the project.

The North Dakota Broadband Mapping Application displays information about the types, availability, and providers of broadband services in North Dakota. The information is a compilation of data from public sources, crowd sourced data, commercial data, and broadband service providers.

Note About Depiction of Broadband Availability

The criteria for broadband availability as established by NTIA is:

Broadband service is “available” to an end user at an address if a broadband service provider does, or could, within a typical service interval (7 to 10 business days) without an extraordinary commitment of resources, provision two-way data transmission to and from the Internet with advertised speeds of at least 768 kilobits per second (kbps) downstream and at least 200 kbps upstream to the end user at the address.
